UCS2905 IC Pixel Protocol Overview

In previous post, we disscussed the SPI version pixel 5-in-1 RGBWW LED tapes named FW1906 IC RGBWW led pixel tape which the FW1906 IC was designed by Titan Micro Electronics Co. in China.

Most customers are unfamiliar with how to make the correct FW1906 program in the software because its double RGB channels. Any double RGB channels IC is needed to divide into double zones to make the program to run the LEDs playing correct color changing.

Today, let's discuss another 5 channels IC pixel chip which is available to produce the SPI protocol digital 5-in-1 RGBTW LED pixel tapes named UCS2905.

This UCS2905 IC chip. Yes, you're right, it is still designed by UCS New Technology Co. .  It uses a SPI protocol to drive IC pixel chips.

From its pin define, we can find it has 5 channels to run R,G,B,White 1,White 2 that all channels are in single zone that is different with the FW1906 IC which has double zone.

This UCS2905 comes in a SOP10 package, allowing us for more flexibility with LED solutions for 5 colors playing easily.

UCS2905 Technical Specifications:

Data Type Data Only, NO Clock
Color Resolution 8 bits
Assemble package SOP10
RGBWW Yes
Output Voltage 5-48V
Output Current  17mA/Channel
PWM Rate 4.0KHZ
Refresh Rate  Up to 68 fps
Data transfer Speed 800kbps

UCS2905 Advantages:

  1. Very High PWM rate 4.0KHZ allows for filming the pixels with 68fps appromately.

  2. Drive 5 colors LED allowing for tones that were previously hard to achieve with single RGB or RGBW tapes.

  3. RGB, Warm white, White ( any other single color) can be independently controlled to allows us to create bolder and more vibrant colors than with RGB alone.

  4. 48V output solution is available.

UCS2905 Shortcomings:

  1. No Clock data line, only data line restricts refresh rate to be limited by the protocol speed, which will generally be slow.
  2. 8 bits of color resolution, 256 grayscale for each color makes dimming curves less smooth.
  3. No redundancy in data like the GS8208B.
  4. 17mA current / channel, couldn't be higher current output.

UCSS2905 Cautions:

  1. Very Similar with the FW1906 Protocol, but couldn't work together.
  2. Already produced the 5V -12V -24V UCS2905 digital pixel RGBTW 60 LED tapes .
  3. Currently there no 16 bits 5 channel IC, what a pity for this.
